A118 Dashboard Camera – Our Review
The A118 dashboard camera was released in mid-2014. Its super stylish, highly discreet and a fantastic dash cam in affordable price-range. Some other names for A118 dash cam are Tiesfong B40 and AE-CC30.
A118 is based on Novatek NT96650 processor and uses Aptina AR0330 CMOS sensor for recording purpose. The blend of a great processor and successful sensor aids A118 to record very good day time and good night time videos at 1080p (Full HD) @30 FPS (See Video Samples).
A118’s 170° viewing angle is – by far – the largest of all the dash cams that are available in the market as of today. You tend to see more with such viewing angles; some people think that 170° viewing angle – may – lead to fish eye view, but that’s really not the case and A118 seems to handle everything very well.
A very interesting feature about A118 is the way it gets fixed in your car. All you need to do is to tape it on the windscreen using the tape provided with camera, and that’s it. However, A118 also comes with mounting bracket if you wish to use it.
All the features of a good dashboard cameras are present in A118 such as, date and time stamp in video, G-sensor, auto on/off, loop recording etc. However, we’d love to have GPS too.
It’s got a tiny 1.5” display screen; the screen is a bit small though, but that’s ok, considering the fact that a bigger screen would increase the size of camera. You also get an option to choose the size of video files from 1, 3 or 5 minutes.
With A118 dash cam you get the option to mute the microphone and turn the display off. To mute microphone permanently you can make changes in settings; to mute temporarily, just press the button under the display.
To turn off the screen while the dash cam records, all you need to do is to press the power button for a brief amount of time, and the display would turn off.
While operating temperatures are at par with other dash cams at -10°C to 60°C (14°F to 140°F), storage temperature range is also good at -20°C to 70°C (-4°F to 158°F). Hence you can use A118 dash cam in any weather.
The company claims that A118 dash cam supports 32GB memory card; however, some users have reported that even 64GB memory card works perfectly (if formatted using a PC).
Furthermore, A118 comes with a full 1 year warranty.
We request you to view the video in full screen and choose the maximum resolution; this will give you a better understanding of video quality captured by the dashboard camera.
From the video above it’s clear that day time video quality of A118 is quite impressive. The license plates and other details are clearly readable even from considerable distance. In fact it doesn’t even feel like a cheap sub $100 dash cam.
The night time video quality of A118 is also good, although not as good as day time. The video becomes grainy in extreme low light conditions; however, under moderate lighting the dash cam performs well. Nearby license plates etc. are easily readable.

A118 Dashboard Camera – Our Verdict:
So, if you wish to spend less than $100 and yet want a very good, reliable, discreet dash cam, then A118 is definitely a perfect choice.
Priced at $80 (Amazon US, at the time of writing), we believe that it’s really a good deal.
However, we’d suggest you to have a look at the Mini 0801; it’s the best affordable dash cam available in the market today.
