BlackVue DR650GW-2CH – Our Review

Released in mid-2014 by the Korean company, Pittasoft, the BlackVue DR650GW-2CH is an upgrade to their super successful model DR550GW. DR650 is a dual channel dash cam and boasts of certain long-awaited upgrades; we’ve discussed those “upgrades” in our review.

Let’s talk about the looks of DR650; its form factor is similar to its predecessor and hence DR650 is also cylindrical in shape; however, the color is changed to complete black providing extra stealth. There’s white color text at the front of the dash cam, it reduces the stealth somewhat; you can cover the text with black tape.

Absence of a display screen keeps DR650GW small in size at 4.67”x1.4”. only. Since there’s no display screen, you can configure the BlackVue DR650GW-2CH using the voice based menu system.

Coming to the technical side of DR650GW-2CH; the image sensor is upgraded from 2MP in DR550 to 2.4 MP SONY EXMOR CMOS. This ensures outstanding day and very good night time video quality (see sample videos).

DR650GW records everything at 1080p (Full HD) @30 FPS (for front cam); the rear cam records 720p (HD) videos @30FPS.

The viewing angle of DR650GW-2CH is 129°; that’s a bit lower than some dash cams in the same price range but it warrants that there’s no distortion at edges.

The overheating issue, of DR550, is also resolved; in fact the DR650GW runs way cooler than its predecessor. In another upgrade, the sound quality of DR650 is improved.

The coaxial cable (that connects front and rear cams) has also had a makeover; it’s thinner and much easier to hide under the carpet.

Another major upgrade that comes with BlackVue DR650GW – 2CH is FOTA (Firmware Over The Air). While other dash cams need a PC or Mac for firmware upgrade, the DR650 can update its firmware automatically once it gets connected to Wi–Fi via mobile app.

All regular functions like loop recording, g-sensor, auto on/off, date/time/speed stamp in video etc. are standard features with DR650. It also has the rare parking mode, Wi-Fi, GPS and much more.

All in all, the BlackVue DR650GW-2CH is one hell of an awesome dash cam to invest in.

BlackVue DR650GW-2CH Dash Cam – Video Samples

We request you to view the video in full screen and choose the maximum resolution; this will give you a better understanding of video quality captured by the dashboard camera.

Day Time Video Sample:

Front Camera:

The BlackVue DR650GW-2CH works awesome during day time; there’s a lot of detail that the dash cam captures and everything’s is clearly visible.

Rear Camera:

Even the rear camera records stunning videos during day time. In fact, the video quality, for a rear dash cam, is much better than some higher priced dashboard cameras.

Night Time Video Sample:

Front Camera:

The night time video quality is not as good as day time, but, that’s the case with all the dashboard cameras. However, the night time video quality for BlackVue DR650GW-2CH beats many other expensive dash cams.

Rear Camera:

While front camera performs well during night time, the rear one isn’t far behind. Being a 720p camera, there’s a lot of detail that has been captured.
