Cobra CDR 840 Dash Cam Review
When it comes to finding a good dashboard camera in mid-range segment (between $100 and $200) then the Cobra CDR 840 dash cam is definitely a worthy competitor. It comes from a leading (and known for superb quality) dashboard camera manufacturer Cobra, and was released in mid-2014.
The quality of CDR 840 is second to none and the manufacturer seems to have done a really great job. Furthermore, as an icing on cake, the CDR 840 comes with a full one year warranty from the manufacturers.
Similar to the Cobra CDR 900, CDR 840 also comes with an 8 GB memory card and hence this dash cam is live and loaded right out of the box. Just fit it in your car (which is, by the way, actually easy) and the unit is ready to shoot really crisp and awesome videos at 1080p (Full HD resolution) in a jiffy.
By the way, the 12 mega pixel (MP) camera of CDR 840 also shoots some really high quality still images.
The size of CDR 840 is a huge plus point when it comes to discreetness (considering the fact that this dashboard camera is not black in color which reduces the stealth somewhat). It’s still smaller than many other dash cams out there and easily hides behind the rear view mirror of your car.
See the video below to understand the size and know some more things about the Cobra CDR 840 dashboard camera.
Carrying further, it comes with an internal GPS which enables this dashboard camera to embed your exact location, date and time in the video. We believe that this information can be very useful if you ever happen to be involved in an unfortunate event like accident or insurance scam and you need to prove your point in court.
Also, there’s free software (which you can download here) if you wish to playback your location and all other G-Sensor information on a HDTV or any computer.
CDR 840 also comes with an HDMI output port that enables the dash cam to playback any recorded video directly on to an HDMI compatible device such as a HDTV or PC. However, if you wish to view a video right inside your car, then there’s the CDR 840’s 1.5” inch display screen at your service. The screen is a bit small though, but it pretty well does its job.
The viewing angle of CDR 840 dash cam is 118° which is a bit less than most of the competitors out there, but that’s still acceptable considering the fact that the video quality of this dash cam beats the video quality of most other cams in this (mid-price range) segment. See video samples below.
Apart from all these features, the CDR 840 has all other regular and standard features like loop recording, auto on/off, date and time stamp in video etc. You can download the complete features and specification manual (PDF) here.
We request you to view the video in full screen and choose the maximum resolution; this will give you a better understanding of video quality captured by the dashboard camera.
Day Time Video Sample:
As you can see that the video quality of CDR 840 is very good in the mid-range price segment.
Cobra CDR 840 Dash Cam – Our Verdict:
The Cobra CDR 840 is, by far, a very good dashboard camera in the mid-range price segment. Hence if you’re looking for a good, reliable dash cam that can record some seriously clear Full HD videos then the Cobra CDR 840 is probably a very good solution.
Priced at $122.15 (at the time of writing), we believe that this is the best deal. Go for it!
