DOD LS430W – Our Review

The highly successful DOD LS430W was released in mid-2013 (by DOD Tech) and still continues to be one of the best-selling dashboard cameras (even though new dash cams have hit the market since then). It’s locked and loaded with some cool features that really give its competitors a run for their money.

It’s not a secret anymore that a good dashboard camera must record some seriously good quality videos and DOD LS430W does just that. While the F/1.6 aperture and WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) enhances video quality, the Super Night Vision makes sure that night time video footage is as kick ass as during day.

It records everything at 1080p (Full HD) @ 30 FPS; the video quality, both day and night, is second to none (See sample videos). You’ll love the crisp and excellent still images that this dash cam can take @ 12 MP.

An interesting feature of DOD LS430W is that it can be configured to warn you if you happen to accelerate over a certain speed and that’s possible because of the integrated GPS; the GPS records & embeds your vehicle’s location, speed and date & time in the video footage. However, if you prefer not to have these details in the video then you can switch this feature off.

Because of the 2.7” display screen, the DOD LS430W is not a small dash cam and measures 4.41×2.56×1.3 inches. However, we really loved the screen, it’s bright and clear; the menu is very easy to use and setting up the dash cam was a breeze.

The 140° (diagonal) viewing angle is another remarkable feature of LS430W that puts it ahead of other dash cams in the mid-price range segment; however, KDLinks X1 has wider viewing angle (165° diagonal).

Another feature that we liked a lot is the external “emergency” button which (when pressed) marks current video footage. Once marked, that video footage won’t be deleted by loop recording.

While most other dash cams in this price range support 32 GB memory cards, the DOD LS430W supports 64GB; therefore, it records approx.10 hours of Full HD video before loop recording starts to overwrite oldest footage.

Note: Make sure that you format the 64 GB memory card into FAT32 file system to make it compatible with DOD LS430W.

Huge temperature swings isn’t a problem with DOD LS430W as its operating temperature range is -25°C ~ +70°C (-13°F to 158°F); for most dash cams the operating temperature range is -10°C ~ +60°C, hence LS430W gets full marks here.

Users report that mounting LS430W is a breeze as it’s a suction cup mounted camera. However, manufacturers also provide 3M tape with the dash cam if you prefer adhesive mount.

Here’s a list of things that you get in the package:

  1. DOD LS430W dash cam
  2. Suction cup mount
  3. 3M Tape – adhesive mount
  4. HDMI cable
  5. Power cable
  6. USB cable
  7. User Manual
  8. CD with software

Having looked at that, here’s a quick list of Pros and Cons of DOD LS430W:

  1. Awesome day and night time video quality (See sample videos)
  2. Integrated GPS
  3. External emergency button to mark video footage
  4. More viewing angle (140°) than its competitors
  5. 64 GB memory support – most other dash cams support 32 GB
  6. WDR
  7. Super Night Vision
  8. Very easy to install
  9. Super reliable
  10. Wider operating temperature range; -25°C ~ +70°C (-13°F to 158°F)

  1. Poor English manual
  2. No Wi-Fi
  3. Not compatible with Sandisk 64 GB memory cards
  4. A bit big in size
  5. The text on front of the camera reduces the stealth somewhat (as a workaround, you can cover it with black tape)

To sum it up, all we can say is that the DOD LS430W is a perfect choice for anyone who’s looking for an awesome and reliable dashboard camera in the mid-range price segment.
