LUKAS LK 7900 ARA – Our Review
The Lukas LK 7900 ARA, a high-price range dashboard camera, was released in early-2014. It’s actually an upgrade to the hot seller Lukas LK 7900 ACE. As it’s an upgraded version, some cool features are added to it; we’ve discussed those and much more below.
Externally, LK 7900 ARA looks similar to 7900 ACE and this makes it super discreet. The casing is completely black providing additional stealth.
On the technical side, a huge upgrade is the support of OBD-II interface. Hence, LK7900 ARA records important data regarding your driving such as mileage, battery, gear level, status of brakes, position of steering etc. However, OBD-II functionality would work only if your car is compatible with it.
Here’s a list of compatible cars (latest models of following brands):
- GM / Chevrolet
For more detailed list of models, you can check this link at manufacturer’s website.
Note: In order to get to the list, you need to scroll down the page to the “Applicable Vehicles” part. You’ll find a detailed table of brands and models that support OBD-II functionally.
There are two versions of Lukas LK 7900 ARA that have been launched:
- B type – with internal GPS and no OBD-II adapter
- D type – with external GPS and OBD-II adapter
Hence, if your car is in the compatibility list, then go for D type else buy the B type.
In another upgrade 7900 ARA’s memory support is increased; while ACE supported 128 GB, ARA can support a massive 256 GB memory card.
The video quality of LK 7900 ARA is very good and better than its predecessor (see sample videos). Everything’s recorded at 1080p (Full HD) @30 FPS. However, for such an expensive dash cam, we expected better.
Another cool feature is CPL (Circular Polarizing Lens) support which you can purchase separately. A CPL reduces the glare on lens during bright and sunny days. Don’t forget to take out the CPL during night time else it leads to dark videos.
Similar to ACE, ARA also works in extreme temperatures, thanks to the use of super capacitor rather than battery. While operating temperature range is -20°C to 80°C (-4˚F to 176˚F), the storage temperature range is even wider at -30°C to 90°C (-22˚F to 194˚F). Hence, whether it’s freezing cold or melting heat, just be relaxed that your dash cam is alive and kicking.
Other functions such as loop recording, G-sensor, auto on/off, GPS, parking mode, date/time and speed stamp in video etc. are standard features with LUKAS LK 7900 ARA.
