Mini 0806 – Our Review

The Mini 0806 is the latest addition (released late-2014) to the very popular Chinese Mini 080x series. It’s a mid-range dash cam and the successor to Mini 0805. There are certain exciting upgrades that have been added to Mini 0806; we’ve discussed these upgrades in our review, so just read on.

Mini 0806’s form factor is similar to 0805/0803; while 0805 and 0803 were completely cylindrical, the 0806 has a bit of edges. Having said that, the 0806 is still super stealthy; while 1.5” display screen and all black casing adds to discreetness, the cylindrical lens compliments the form factor.

On the technical side, Mini 0806 uses Ambarella A7LA50 processor and Omnivision OV4689 sensor (the same as that of 0805). The optional GPS is located in the mount of the dashboard camera.

0806 records 1296p (Super HD) videos @30 FPS. You can even record 1080p (Full HD) videos @30 or 45 FPS. The video quality, during day and night time, is second to none (see sample videos). The night time video quality is improved by HDR (High Dynamic Range).

An upgrade in video resolution is the addition of 2560×1080 wide resolution (that’s the popular 16:9 landscape resolution).

Another important upgrade is CPL (Circular Polarizing Lens) support (similar to Lukas LK 7900 ACE). A CPL reduces the glare during bright sunny days. Do remember to take off the CPL during night time else it leads to darker videos. Since the CPL, in Mini 0806, is magnetically mounted it’s very easy to install and remove it.

Other functions such as loop recording, G-sensor, date/time and speed stamp in video, auto on/off etc. are standard features with Mini 0806. As said earlier the GPS is optional.

Additionally, 0806 inherits the LDWS (Lane Warning Departure System) and FCWS (Forward Collision Warning System) from 0805. However, if you don’t wish to utilize these features, you can turn them off.

One more upgrade in Mini 0806 is the memory card support. While most other dash cams support 32 or 64 GB memory card, the 0806 supports gigantic 256 GB.

Since this is a very new dash cam, there are some defects that users are complaining about (see cons). Hopefully, the defects will be dealt with in future firmware upgrades.

All in all, Mini 0806 is a good dashboard camera and a welcome member to Mini 080x family; but as it has its own share of issues, we’d suggest you to go with Mini 0805 (which is a much stable version).

Do have a look at day and night time video samples of Mini 0806 that we’ve included on our website.

Mini 0806 Dash Cam – Our Verdict

In conclusion, Mini 0806 is a very good dashboard camera, but since this is a very new one, there are certain defects that’ll be resolved in future upgrades. Hence, we’d suggest you to opt for Mini 0805 that offers similar video quality.
